Oral surgery is the dental specialty involving surgical treatment of diseases, injuries and deformities of the mouth, teeth, gums and jaws. Oral surgeons treat problems caused by wisdom teeth, facial injuries, and jaw disorders, and are skilled in reconstructive surgery.

Dental extraction is the removal of a tooth from the mouth. Extractions are performed for a wide variety of reasons, including tooth decay that has destroyed enough tooth structure to prevent restoration. Extractions of impacted or problematic wisdom teeth are also routinely performed, as are extractions of some permanent teeth to make space for orthodontic treatment.
Extractions are often categorized as "simple" or "surgical".

1) Simple Extractions: Simple extractions are performed on teeth that are visible in the mouth, usually under local anaesthetic, and require only the use of instruments to elevate and/or grasp the visible portion of the tooth.

2) Surgical Extractions: Surgical extractions involve the removal of teeth that cannot be easily accessed, either because they have broken under the gum line or because they have not erupted fully. In a surgical extraction the dental surgeon may elevate the soft tissues covering the tooth and bone and may also remove some of the overlying and/or surrounding bone tissue with a drill or osteotome.

An apicectomy is a surgical procedure in which a portion of the root of a tooth is removed. An apicectomy should not be considered an elective procedure, but should be undertaken only when conventional endodontic root filling techniques have failed. Sometimes, apicectomies also involve the removal of a cyst at the top of the tooth root. Apicectomies are more often performed for front teeth (they are easier to access) but can be carried out on back teeth.

If you are recommended an apicectomy, it is because that the tooth may be lost without it and that an apicectomy may be the only method of saving the tooth.

Bone grafting is a surgical procedure that replaces missing bone with material from the patient's own body, an artificial, synthetic, or natural substitute. Bone grafting is used to repair bone fractures that are extremely complex, pose a significant risk to the patient, or fail to heal properly.

Teeth are remarkably strong, but they can chip, fracture or break. Teeth usually break as a result of trauma — from biting down on something hard, for example, or from a blow to the face. A child may fracture a tooth falling off a bike or curb during play. Cavities that have weakened the tooth also can cause chipping or fractures.

Some fractures will require surgery before a crown can be placed. If the facture is below the gum line, close to or below the bone holding the tooth in the jaw, surgery will be needed to remove some bone to create enough room to place the crown over the root properly.

Oral and maxillofacial surgery is surgery to correct a wide spectrum of diseases, injuries and defects in the face, jaws and the hard and soft tissues of the oral and maxillofacial region. It is a recognized international surgical specialty.
